What to Know in an Emergency
When an accident or illness happens to you or a significant part of your family, this is not the time to be trying to remember or locate items that are needed immediately. Your mind is filled with anxiety during a time like this and it is too difficult to recall necessary information if you have not prepared. To save you and your family additional stress during a difficult time, make sure you are aware of vital information so that you can deal with them automatically. What do you need to know?
Who to Contact
Having a list of phone numbers on hand may be a true lifesaver in an emergency. This list should include the primary doctor of each family member, next-of-kin, poison control, and anyone else who may be involved in medical decision-making or who knows the location of any legal documents that may be needed.
Basic Life-saving Techniques
Most people have a general idea of how live-saving techniques, such as CPR or the Heimlich maneuver, work. Without proper training and practice, however, it can be difficult to recall how to do them the right way during an emergency. Take a class from a certified instructor and spend time reviewing and practicing what you have learned until it is second nature. You may never need to use what you know but you will be better off just in case it is necessary.
Treatment Wishes
If your spouse suffers a head injury and is in a coma, do you know the type of treatment they want? Unfortunately, many people do not have this conversation simply because it's so unpleasant to think about but then have an agonizing decision to make without knowing the wishes of their mate. Have the conversation and put it in writing so if the time ever comes, you will not have any doubts about what your spouse wants.
Location of Important Documents
Where is your will, the title to your vehicles and property, your medical directive? If they are not in one place, get them there. For certain legal documents, purchase a secure, fireproof safe or rent a safety deposit box at the bank. However, be sure not to place documents such as a medical directive in the bank. In case of emergency, you must be able to access this information at any time of the day or week.
For any family member you have a medical responsibility for, you should also know their medical history and primary doctor, who will be able to provide complete health records. Have this information in writing and stored with the other important documents you will need in an emergency.
