What to do in an Auto Accident
Take note of the other car's make, model and plate number
, and attempt to get the driver's license number, address and name of the other driver. Also try to determine if the driver is the owner of the car or if they were borrowing the car. Almost all states in the US require that you have minimum liability automobile insurance, so almost everyone will have it, so ask for the driver's auto insurance as well. If there were witnesses to the accident, attempt to get their phone numbers and names. When the police officer gets to the scene, gather his name and badge number and inquire about how you can obtain a copy of the accident report. Do not admit guilt at the scene, even if you believe it is your fault, just allow the officer to make his determination. Even if an accident looks minor, do not simply agree to forget about it. There are injuries like concussions and whiplash that can go unnoticed until the next day, and can be very painful or dangerous. For your own records, write down your account of the accident, the time, weather, road conditions, your speed and note if there was any prior damage on other cars involved. After all of this has been completed, call your insurance company to notify them of the accident. Of course, hopefully, you have fully checked out your policy beforehand.
