If requested, court reporters must provide information from the transcripts they take to courts, attorneys, judges, other parties and the public. In addition, many court reporters assist judges and attorneys in researching and organizing information that is used in the courtroom as well as assisting in the courtroom and in procedural administration. Stenographers may also provide closed captioning and translating services to the deaf or hard of hearing.

There are several methods of court reporting that may be used. Stenographic reporters use a stenotype machine to document statements made in official proceedings. The machine uses symbols to electronically record letters, sounds, or phrases and translate and quickly display them as text. Another method is electronic reporting which uses audio equipment to record in the court room.

The court reporter is responsible for taking notes on who is speaking and ensuring the clarity and sound quality of the recording. The recordings are typically transcribed into written text afterwards. Voice writing is another method of court reporting in which reporters repeat what is being said by everyone in the courtroom into a small microphone to be used to create written transcripts afterwards.

Court reporting professionals may even work in settings other than a court room. They can work as webcasters or internet information reporters. Others work for television broadcasting networks providing captioning to be viewed on the TV screen.

Stenographers can also work in attorney's offices or for government agencies. This allows plenty of room to advance or further your career and salary. There are even opportunities to do some of the work of a court reporter from home. This is a great option for people with children and families.

The amount of training required to become a court reporting professional ranges from less than a year for a beginning voice writer to around thirty three months for a stenotypist. Many reporters advance their career through additional certifications to demonstrate that they have achieved a higher level of experience and competency for the job.

The salary of a court reporter varies depending on location and years of experience and certifications that have been achieved. The national average annual salary of a court reporting professional is around $64,000 a year.
