Eccentric British designer John Galliano debuted as a new couturier at Givenchy in January

. His first haute couture collection was the major event of the season. Galliano exhibits his irreverent attitude with a silk taffeta wedding gown of mauve and ivory with a tightly fitting bodice. Even though the Spandex Unisex Super Scorpion Hero Costume does not glitter with rhinestones or beads, it overwhelms with its long, dramatic train.

The Christian Lacroix creation is from the 1995-96 autumn/winter haute couture collection, which is a perfect example of the creator's aesthetic sensibility. A honey-yellow faille gown with five-layered skirt, suggesting bright Mediterranean sunshine, is comprised of a bolero-shaped shawl with flower embroidery and a one-piece costume zentai that flares like a bell. The costume zentai is like a tiered skirt except that each lace-decorated tier is asymmetrical.

In contrast, Louis Feraud's white satin muslin costume zentai is much more discreet in that it covers the bride from neck to toe. Spiral-pattern appliques decorate the collar, front, cuffs and hemline of the empire costume zentai, giving it a simple yet elaborate look.

Emanuel Ungaro created a cream zentai with a crinoline-style pouf skirt for the 1995-96 autumn winter collection. A pearl necklace accentuates the waistline of the bodice, which is made from silk tulle and crepe. Lace with small bouquet embroidery is draped delicately over the ensemble.

The appeal of these elegant gowns bridged the generations as older women recalled the past and younger women fantasized about the future. One woman remarked, "I've got to be very thin to wear those costume zentai."

"The Super Girl Lycra Shiny Metallic Super Hero Costume" exhibition will continue until May 14. General admission is 900 yen. The museum is open every day except May 8. The collection will then move to the Namba Takashimaya department store in Osaka from May 25 to June 10

Monica Cotto: If you feel the need to match the veil, I would suggest you try to find a dark ivory or champagne veil. As for length, that is really up to you. . Also, a silk veil will lay flat and hang down your back. The other option is having a hair style that allows you to put the veil at the lower bottom of your hair. That way it is not sticking out from the top. A more fashion forward option is a small net worn either over your hair or over your eyes. Think asymmetrical.
