Whats The Point Of A School Uniform?
There may be a few students that you wont hear that question from
, but most of the students wonder, What is the point of a school uniform? This question is going to be more common among students at a school that just started implementing a school uniform for students. Even some parents as they struggle to come up with the money for school uniform or are driving to yet another store in search of a dress code compliant uniform in their students size may be wondering, What is the point of a school uniform?
There has been a lot of debate about school uniforms and it isnt likely to end anytime soon. While some people claim that every school should adopt a uniform policy, others are quite opposed to them. Regardless of which side you are on, you probably have some very strong feelings on the matter. You will find that there are pros and cons to both sides of the issue. Sometimes these pros and cons are even the same on both sides of the issue. While this may seem confusing, it is easier to understand by taking individuality as an example. Some of the biggest arguments about school uniforms revolve around the topic of individuality
Individuality used to support a school uniform
Reducing individuality among students is a reason to implement a school uniform requirement at a school. This can be a good thing since the expression of in individuality may cause problems between students. It is believed that by removing the economic differences that are often evident in students dress, that there will be less problems and more positive interaction among students. It is believed that the more people look alike, the less fights and disturbances there will be. Clothing choices can cause a huge division and whenever this is removed from the classroom, it is believed that children will have a lot less to fight about. Unfortunately, even when children are forced to wear uniforms they arent all going to look alike as some will still look better than others, thus leaving some children subject to the cruelty of the their peers.
Individuality use to argue against school uniforms
Some people also believe that by taking away a students individuality you are not lessening the source of trouble but only taking away the things that makes people special. This is because most people, especially children, define themselves by the way that they look. So, if you take away a childs ability to express themselves through the clothes that they choose to wear, they will have to find some other way in which to express themselves and some of these other ways could actually be worse and even more destructive. Also when teaching students to conform, it can backfire because when you want students to stand up and be an individual when peers are doing drugs, alcohol, bullying, or other destructive behavior, a student that has been conditioned to conform may not have the skills to stand alone and do what is right.
So what is the point of school uniforms if both sides have valid points? The point is to provide the best learning environment for students and some studies show that school uniforms help with that, even if problems with division and fighting among students still exist in the school. Though initially it may seem more expensive, often school uniforms are more affordable.
It doesnt matter if you are for or against school uniforms, they are becoming more common and you will probably find yourself buying school uniforms whether or not you see the point in your student wearing them.
