Wheel Protection During Winter
Winter is one season in which wheels if not taken good care of can become useless to you
. This is a period when the temperatures are absolutely low and this exposes wheels into danger of malfunctioning.
You are advised to remove and store your wheels during winter if they are not in use. However, sometimes you may be required to use your racing wheels during the winter season too. So the question comes up; what can you do to protect your wheels from harsh winter weather conditions? There are several steps that you can follow and be on the safe side when winter comes. The first thing you do is wash the wheels until they are sparkling clean. Wash them using warm water and a soap solution. A wheel cleaner can also be used. After washing and ensuring that they are clean, dry them using a drying towel.
Next, by the use of a wheel polish, spray any polish of your choice around the rim of the wheel. Leave it to dry for some time and add another layer of polish. You can add 2 or 3 layers for maximum protection of the rim which is the major purpose for polish spraying. After all the coats dry off, add a clear coating on top. This will protect the racing wheels from rust.
During winter, always ensure that anytime you go out for a race, the first thing you do when you come back is wash your wheels. Use warm water and a brush to wash them. Usually, salt brine is applied on roads to melt down the snow and the ice. This salt brine will stick on your wheels and if not washed off, it will cause harm to the wheels. Warm water will help dissolve some of the salt ensuring that no salt is left on the wheel surface. Dry them off after washing to prepare them for polishing. Do this on a regular basis whenever you come back from a ride.
Always apply polish and a clear coating on the wheels after washing them. The polish you had applied before winter is not enough. Actually what happens is, the salt brine from the roads, even after washing the wheels might remain on the wheel surface. It eats through the polish. This might expose wheels to rust. To be on the safer side, its better to apply polish any time you come back from a drive and this should be after washing them nicely.
You can also apply wax on top for protection. After this, leave the racing wheels to dry before the next drive.
Another thing that you should always check is your tire pressure. It should remain constant throughout. Remember that the air/pressure in the tire is what carries the weight of the car. During winter, as a result of the coldness, the air in the tire contracts and this makes the tire look as if it has no air in it. To be safer, make sure that the tire is always inflated to the required pressure so that even if the air contracts, it can still hold the car in place.
These precautions should see your racing wheels through the winter season and you will not have to go back to the shop to get new ones when winter is gone. You can also buy storage bags if you will not use your car during this period and store your wheels. An example of a store where you can buy them is The
American Racing Wheels store.
