When A Normal Hearing Test Result Should Be Reconsidered

Many people know the frustration of feeling a certain way but having the medical tests show that nothing is wrong

. Part of you wants everything to be fine, but part of you knows it is not, so you want to know what is wrong. This can happen with a hearing test. An individual can have normal results while he or she knows that something is wrong. Sometimes these cases are passed off as King Kopetzky syndrome. About five to thirty-seven percent of the people who come in for testing actually leave being given this diagnosis.

The unfortunate thing about this being a common diagnosis is that the audiologists and ENTs who diagnosis may be missing something major. This syndrome is highly psychological in nature, although some physical traits are connected as well. It is said to happen sometimes to those who have deafness in their family, those who are around a lot of noise, and also with those who are lonely or depressed. With this issue, aid devices are sometimes used, as is counseling, and help for anxiety and stress.

It could be that someone who says they have problems being able to hear and then have a normal hearing test are disturbed psychologically, but it is also possible that there is another underlying condition that can cause a hearing test to not be consistent with how a person feels. Someone could have a brain tumor that is pressing on the brain stem causing the ability to hear to come and go. This might be similar to someone with auditory neuropathy.

Neurological disorders such as MS can also cause such symptoms. Symptoms to watch out for are loss of ability to hear on only one side, or a sudden loss. It is important that if you as the patient are feeling strange symptoms that you not give in to a diagnosis such as King Kopetzky syndrome and let it stay at that.

It is important to be your own advocate and insist on further tests. If you do not already have an ENT, you should go to your primary care physician and ask for a referral. Talk to your doctors about doing and MRI because this could show up problems such as brain tumors. You should also ask for another hearing test, because it may take more than one or two to get accurate results.

A hearing test may just be the start of what needs to be done before you find out what is truly affecting your body. Do not give up until you are satisfied with the diagnosis.
