flying lanterns , also known as Wish Lanterns and Kongming Lanterns, are made from oiled rice paper and wrapped around a bamboo frame. Traditionally used at Asian festivals, these airborne lanterns are now popular in the U.S. as well. A fuel cell, or small candle, is placed inside the lantern which, when lit, heats the lantern and causes it to rise high up into the air. Sky lanterns will remain in the air as long as the flame is going inside of it. After the flame goes out, the lanterns float gracefully back down. Chinese lanterns are so popular in China that they have a Chinese Lantern Festival called Yuan-Xiao Festival. Begun in 104 BC, the Chinese Lantern Festival is held every year on the first night of the New Year. Chinese people hang thousands of colorful paper lanterns all over China in celebration of this event. These lanterns can be found today in many stores as well as online. Hang the lanterns inside or out; they are a festive addition to any party or celebration.
