When Looking To Eliminate Waste In Business Start By Making Your Employees More Efficient
When it comes to reducing waste in your organization
, you can cross your fingers and hope that people start working more efficiently, or you can take some proactive measures to resolve the problems. It is not enough to identify the problem and then throw some money on it. Everyone knows that it does not really work, and there would be no way to track progress and set benchmarks. So how do you identify and implement a plan to solve a problem? This must be a team effort, one individual will not be able to see the problem, solve the problem and ensure that it stays fixed.
One of the misconceptions is that you are looking for problems. While that is true, because sometimes they are easy to identify, what you are really looking for are opportunities. You are looking for opportunities within the processes already in place that you can improve. You have to improve because constant improvement is how you get better and leaner and more competitive. You have to look at the entire process and figure out what is crucial and what is just wasted effort.
This includes essential, productive steps in the process and can even sometimes mean the other things that are involved in the process. The most important things to look at is what directly affect and contribute to the cost to make or provide the product to your customers. There are certain things that are essential to the running of the business, but do not have a direct affect on how fast and efficient the product is made.
The way things work in the office, for example, while critical to the functioning of the company, does not, or should not affect the speed and efficiency in the factory. If they are a contributing factor, then there is a problem that is easy to identify. Start with the easiest, fastest things you can fix to begin making improvement.
Sometimes when simple things are fixed, it will open a window so you can clearly see other inefficiencies and you will be able to better identify them. This is a process, and like any process, it involves many steps and takes time. But if you rush through the changes, they will most likely not be exactly what you need. Also, it will be harder to put them in place, and have them be accepted as the new way to do something, without a good explanation.
