, 1989

Well thats the official date anyway but the manufacturers soon fought there way through an Appeal Court and the ban was partially overturned, so asbestos is still been manufactured to this day.

The appeal stated that the manufacturers could still manufacture but not manufacture new products so, for example it could not be used in the manufacture of cellphones or computers or IPads, however how about the old uses, well, it can still be used in the manufacture of felt for flooring, speciality paper such as corrugated cardboard and also asbestos can be used in plaster tiles, wall cladding, roof tiles and even clothing The great news is though that other manufacturers had found a substitute in glass and cellulose fibre so because now all manufacturers must display the make up of a product, consumers are now well educated in the dangers of asbestos and so simply wouldnt buy such products.

So even though the ban was full of holes the sales of materials containing asbestos is now minuscule thanks to the consumer.

When was asbestos banned in developing countries? The short answer is that it hasnt been and so India still imports lots of asbestos from Canada and Russia to be used in the construction of houses for the poor, as its such a cheap material to purchase.

Also, it takes about 40 years for the effects of asbestos to manifest itself into an incurable cancer called Mesothelium so cynically you could say that developing nations would be saying to themselves Well, that wont be my problem in 40 years time.

There have been legal suits all over the world that have been won after long fought court battles particularly by past asbestos factory workers against their companies, but, tragically people living in impoverished areas of developing countries have not had any education as to the dangers of living with asbestos and even when they are realized will surely not have the funds to take any class actions against their governments even though WHO (World Health Organisation) has asked for a blanket worldwide ban on asbestos.
