When in Perth

Perth is the state capital of Western Australia, an enormous state that is about ten times the size of Texas and stretches from the tropics in the north to the Southern Ocean in the south.

Perth's climate is similar to Los Angeles and those countries of the Mediterranean, but in reverse as it's in the Southern Hemisphere. Therefore if you are a fan of long hot summers days and swimming in the warm oceans, then its best to visit Perth in January to March. Perth in fact is sometimes referred to as a "Mini Los Angeles" because aside from the similar climate, from a distance, the tall towers that monopolize the city skyline could be mistaken for those of LA.

The city itself is located on the banks of the Swan River. In high season, there are many tour boats that will take you down to Fremantle where the Swan River meets the pristine blue waters of the Indian Ocean.

Perth has survived the Global Financial Crisis handsomely in the last five years; due to the money the state has made selling iron ore, oil and gas to the global powerhouse that is China. This will become evident after a quick walk along the city streets where you will encounter new luxury outlets such as Gucci and Hugo Boss.

Perth also has the honor of being officially the most isolated city in the world. Compared to Sydney and Melbourne, Perth is a very small city and there is not a lot to do after you've admired the tall glass skyscrapers and had a cappuccino. So, your first stop should be to head up to Kings Park, which is only a mile or two from the city. Here, they have plants collected from all corners of Western Australia in one place. In fact, the best time to visit Kings Park is in the spring, around September, when the flowers are in full bloom.

Next, if you are a beach lover, head down to Cottesloe. This is the Perth equivalent to Sydney's Bondi and where the young and beautiful hang out. If you don't like wearing a swimming costume, then a swift walk north along the beach to Swanbourne is in order! The best time to visit Perth's many beaches is before midday for two reasons. In summer, the heat will drive you off the beach, and in the early afternoon you will encounter the sea breeze, also know as the "Fremantle doctor" which arrives like clockwork and will literally blow you off the beach!

The great thing about Australia is that there is accommodation to suit every budget. Everywhere you look you will see a backpacker, and it won't take you long to find a back packers hotel for you and your osprey aether 70.

It also won't take you long to discover the fact that wine production is very big in this region and so is the business of showing off the vineyards to tourists. The nearest vineyards are in the Swan Valley where there are about 40. There are a number of boat cruises that leave Perth every day to tour these. Further afield, about 6 hours drive south from Perth is the town of Margaret River which is the center of this region's wine production. A visit here is well worth it as there are also chocolate and cheese factories where you can sample the locally produced delights.

Finally a visit to the southern forests is a must. In this region of the world, enormous Karri and Marri trees grow, secondly only in size to California's redwoods. At Walpole there is an aerial walk way which takes you through the tree's enormous canopies.
