A recent randomized, double blind clinical trial on whey protein shows that the effective supplementation with whey decreases fat mass by over 6% without any other changes made. In the study 53 people were either given whey protein or a similar tasting drink that had the same amount of calories but those calories were not from whey. Each person was overweight but had no other health issues.
The subjects took the whey protein twice per day, just before breakfast and just before dinner. Before and after the 12 week time period dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure the change in body fat and muscle mass during the study.
While both groups lost weight over the time period, the whey protein group lost significantly more body fat than the control group. Also, the amount of muscle mass lost during the 12 week time period was significantly less in the whey group than the control group.
Previous research studies have shown that whey protein taken during an exercise program can enhance body fat loss, but this is the first study to show increased fat loss without the addition of exercise.
Other research on whey protein suggest that the high calcium in whey may partially explain its benefits along with the high amounts of leucine, which together work to decrease hunger and suppress appetite. This helps to target fat cells for weight loss as opposed to muscle cells.
Dietary approaches to weight loss currently involve changing the carbohydrate to protein ratio or increasing the intake of proteins while keeping overall calories low. Dietary interventions focused on providing a low-carbohydrate-to-protein ratio and increased consumption of proteins with high-biological value, may help obese/ overweight subjects in losing fat and retaining the lean muscle mass. The amino acid leucine's ability to bring about muscle synthesis is believed to be responsible for people being able to maintain their muscle and strength during weight loss.
Considering this scenario, whey-protein supplements may be the best dietary option during weight loss regimen as they are absorbed faster and are also rich in leucine content (50% to 75% more than the concentrations present in other protein sources). Several hormones, which are known to have an impact on body composition, are believed to be regulated by whey-protein but more research needs to be done on how these hormones and their role in regulating appetite and weight loss.
