. The cost of DJ equipment is slowly creeping down and with half your competition sitting in their bedrooms 'mixing' on DJ Hero the computer game, there has never been a better time to update your kit and make a name for yourself.

DJing itself has moved on at an incredible pace over the last couple of decades, with technology consistently bettering itself in the pursuit of the perfect live set. While Tiesto's elaborate decks and array of audio equipment may be somewhat out of your price range, there are a range of budget turntables to get you producing some sweet crossfades and beatmatching.

The Stanton T52 turntable is a good example of some high performance DJ equipment that is available at a price affordable even for the youngest DJ. With a pitch control slider and shimmering, cool looks, the Stanton can easily be hooked up to a second turntable when you start to get more ambitious.

Besides a turntable, there is other gear a budding DJ needs in order to get a crowd jumping. However, if you haven't put in the practice or haven't quite got the ear for it, prepare to see your horrendous mix fall flat at a party!

Finally, if you're producing some sweet beats, you're going to want to get them heard so a massive amp and speaker package is a must. Perhaps this is the point where you blow the budget in order to blow the minds of first your parents and next door neighbours, before your deafening pair of subs cuts a swathe through a party or dance hall. With top DJ equipment at your disposal, the only other thing you need is the talent!
