Which Safety Features Are Important On A Ceramic Heater?

You want your portable heater to be safe

You want your portable heater to be safe. That's a part of why you chose a ceramic heater, which usually doesn't get as hot to the touch as other types of heaters. That doesn't mean you shouldn't consider other safety features when you shop.

A ceramic heater works by passing electricity through the ceramic. This causes the aluminum screen in the front to heat. The fan blows the heat into the room. As this happens quickly, the plastic parts of the rest of the heater remain relatively cool. This makes them safer for smaller areas.

Ceramic heaters don't become as hot as other kinds of space heaters. This is a big safety feature, as lower temperatures decrease your risk of fire if anything combustible gets too close to the heater by mistake.

While you may not notice it, many ceramic heaters also have an overheating sensor that shuts the heater down if it does get too hot.

Ceramic heaters only use electricity, which means they do not produce carbon monoxide by burning a fuel.

Any good portable heater should include tip over protection. This is a feature that keeps the heater from running if it gets tipped over. It's very useful if you have pets or small children who might knock it over. It's even useful for those clumsy moments we all have when any of us could knock a heater over by accident.

A timer is another good safety feature. This allows you to set how long the heater will run, so that you don't leave it on unsupervised for an excessive amount of time. This feature protects your power bill as well.

The thermostat is another safety feature that is also very convenient. Set the thermostat, and you can use the heater safely in the bedroom overnight. The thermostat will keep the heater from overheating the room while you sleep.

Make sure you only buy a heater with a UL mark. This means it has been independently tested.

You are the most important safety feature for any space heater. Never place a space heater closer than 3 feet from combustible items. Supervise children and pets near the heater. Always plug your space heater directly into the wall. Never pull the plug by the cord, only by the grip.

No heater is absolutely safe. They get hot - that's why we like them. Take the appropriate precautions when using your ceramic space heater and you shouldn't have any safety issues with it.
