They haven't changed them, since they do deliver the best sounds available. Since they're so large, they're able to deliver more frequencies and better sounds than smaller speaker. Unfortunately, they do take up a lot of space, but they will provide the highest quality sound. They can even deliver the low tones, which aren't delivered well in small speakers.

Bookshelf speakers are the way to go if you're looking for small speakers, instead of floor standing speakers. If you're working in a small area or if you don't want to spend as much money, this is your best option. They make some great bookshelf speakers, but since they're smaller, they won't deliver the sounds of the larger speakers. The advantage is the convenience in placing them.

If you don't want any speakers to show in the room, then there's the option of ceiling or in-wall speakers. They operate the same way the other speakers do, but they're first mounted in a frame before set into the wall or ceiling. Although many wall speakers do come in full-range, it's always best to add a subwoofer (even an in-wall or ceiling subwoofer). In order to match the color of the walls, these speakers come with a grill that can easily be painted to blend in with the walls. The tricky part is installing these speakers, especially the wiring as you'll need to run the wires through the walls.

Another option to consider when it comes to speakers is extending your sound system outdoors with outdoor speakers. Outdoor speakers are weather-resistant and are usually installed under a covered deck. They should have a enough power, since they're outdoors and the sound has room to travel in an open space. I've even seen outdoor speakers designed as rocks that mesh with a pool, so you can pump your tunes while in the pool and the sounds are delivered at ear level.

Speaker wire is often disregarded as an important part of the system. Old wires or low-grade speaker wire can definitely degrade the quality of sound. If you're running your system on old speaker wire, once you make the change you'll notice the difference immediately.
