Who Invented the Cash Register?
Many times we take for granted the simple things in life. We don't think about where things came from that makes life so convenient, we're just glad that they're there. There have been so many inventions in the past for centuries that have made life so much easier, cars make it easier for transportation, telephones for communication, airplanes for crossing the Atlantic, and even cash registers to keep business more intact. Who gets the credit for all of these innovative ideas, do you ever wonder these questions? For example, who invented the cash register?
The cash register is a simple machine that you probably see used every single day. You can't enter and leave a store without hearing the ding of that register open meaning that a sale has been made. Cash registers have helped keep the transactions of businesses under wraps and has helped keep the employees honest in all their sales over the past 150 years.
The cash register (or till as it is called in Great Britain) was invented in 1879 by a man name James Ritty after the American Civil War in Dayton, Ohio. One day he noticed a machine that counted how many times the wheel went around on a steam boat and wondered if he could invent something that did the same thing for counting money. He was the owner of a saloon and dealt with money and transaction all of the time.
He went back and joined up with his brother John Ritty who was a skilled mechanic to create a device that counted the money. After a few failed prototypes the third time was finally the charm and they patented the "Ritty's Incorruptible Cashier" in 1879. They created a factory and started to produce these "cash registers" but running two businesses became too much for John Ritty so he sold his company to a group of investors including Jacob Eckert and John Patterson. In 1884 John Patterson became the majority stock holder and he renamed the company the National Cash Register Company.
A simple saloon owner that once counted the rotations on a steam boat was the founder of the cash register which is now used in almost every store across the whole world. It just goes to show that sometimes by small things great things are brought to pass. Next time someone asks you who invented the cash register, you can now say, James Ritty from Dayton, OH.
