Why A Tent And Tea Bags Are All You Need (well, Almost) When Youre Camping In North Devon

The beauty of getting back to basics is how little stuff you need to cram into the boot of the car

. What? I hear you ask, With that tent? Yes, even with the tent, stove and other paraphernalia I still revel in the fact that no suitcase bigger than the car foot-well plays a part in my seaside camping holiday packing.

In fact, unless youre a scuba diver or paraglider, what do you really need by way of space-guzzling clothing and beautification equipment? Theres no dressing up for dinner, no need for the hair straighteners and change of shoes, just a warm jumper, swimming stuff and favourite book.

Heres my top tips for what to take and what not to bother with

Top things to take on your north Devon camping trip

A tent! There are so many types to choose from so if youre a novice looking to buy one, be sure to take some expert advice. And - importantly - pitch first, play later. Dont end up going out for the day and coming back tired and faced with putting a tent up in the dark, a task that will seem gargantuan.

The bucket barbeque. This brilliant invention brings the fun back into cooking al fresco. Its also really easy to take to the beach. Catch the fishing trip boat out to sea and catch yourself some mackerel then cook them up to enjoy with a bit of fresh bread and a generous dollop of the sauce of your choice over a sea view and a glass of wine.

A warm jumper, for when the great British summer decides to throw everything but the kitchen sink at you. Also a useful garment for keeping warm after that bracing dip in the sea!

A good singing voice. Well, for that authentic, around the camp fire/bucket barbeque feeling, and to feel a bit warmer, you cant go wrong with a good old sing-along.

A reliable pair of walking boots. The beauty of camping in north Devon, especially by the sea, is that there is so much beautiful scenery to be found. The South West Coast Path covers the length of the north Devon coastline allowing some great walking routes, ideal for photographers and general view appreciators alike.

Tea Bags. This shouldnt need explaining really - surely any self-respecting British holiday-maker will ensure the adequate supply of hot beverage making supplies.

What (and who!) not to take

Valuables. If you cant take it with you when youre out and about, dont pack it.

White trainers. Or any pale clothing that you hold in high regard for that matter - its just not worth the bother of attempting to get stains out of clothes when youd rather be out having fun.

Perfume. Wearing a scent that mimics the odour of pollinating flowers (most perfumes) is a sure fire way to let the local creepy-crawly population know youre there.

The in-laws - because lets face it, its more hassle than its worth!
