Why Are Many Chiropractors Against Vaccinations?
Chiropractors believe that the musculoskeletal system affects one's general health via the nervous system
. Therefore, as a chiropractor, they attempt to correct this system in order to improve a person's overall health. Sometimes it has been referred to as an alternate medicine - naturally a label in which almost every chiropractor would deny.
When the term "chiropractic" surfaces, I am often reminded of the somewhat eerie existence of the chiropractor in the 1990 cult classic, Jacob's Ladder. In this film, the protagonist - Jacob Singer, visits a chiropractor in the belief that it will correct the problems he has with his spine. The moment where the chiropractor twists Jacob's neck, in order to improve his health, is a particularly frightening moment - from which Jacob subsequently experiences vivid hallucinations. As it transpires, the chiropractor is actually an angel in order to further Jacob through his journey for solace.
Thus, whilst it is sometimes portrayed as a bleak and ancient profession, chiropractors believe sincerely in what they do. They believe and care, to unimaginable degrees, for what they do - in helping people to improve their overall health. Therefore naturally, when somebody cares passionately for the aforementioned, they are often passionate in the opposite direction - the prevention of a person's deterioration when it comes to their health.
This is the reason that many chiropractors are often against vaccinations, and sometimes water fluoridation - topics which are contentious with or without the presence of a chiropractor. The predominant reason for the rejection of vaccinations can be found in the early chiropractor philosophy that diseases can be traced to causes in the spine. Therefore chiropractors often describe vaccinations as "hazardous", "ineffective", and "unnecessary" - something that prevents the natural healing process of a person's nervous system.
It is naturally a cause of much debate when it comes to vaccinations. Our society has progressed significantly, and with rapid speed, in the past hundred years. One dimension of our progression has thus been in the vaccinations we administer, but another in the overall amelioration of our standard of living. With the common phrase, correlation does not imply causation; it is debated among scientists and others alike, that the prevention of serious diseases may not be attributed to the introduction and development of vaccinations, but rather our society improving in terms of hygiene, quality food, and pure drinking water. With all the numerous side effects that vaccinations can bring, if they are more unhelpful than helpful, then we needn't have vaccinations in our society.
It is the argument that vaccinations are noxious substances that most encourages opponents of vaccinations to voice their opinion. Vaccinations are made up of pathogenic germs or vira, usually grown on animal tissue. They have been subsequently weakened or killed, to prevent the actual disease from manifesting itself. The vaccinations also contain tissue fixatives - such as formaldehyde, and a preservative - such as thiomersal, which is a mercury compound. When injected they cause local reactions - like redness and swelling, or sometimes systemtic reactions, such as vomiting and fevers. On occasions, even the pathogens that people are injected with can develop and become the actual disease they're trying to prevent - as is with the flu injection, which works on a similar principle as aforementioned.
It is perhaps feeble for chiropractors and others to argue otherwise, as vaccinations and other such substances are big business - with the pharmaceutical companies making disproportionate amounts of money in people taking every imaginable substance, for every imaginable illness. The worry is that in years to comes, we might find people suffering from immunodeficiency, and changes to our genetic codes due to the injection of animal tissues into our children.
The choice between chiropractors and vaccinations may not reside simply in the beliefs of the patients, but rather the cost-effectiveness of both treatments, and the information they receive from their doctors - which would most certainly be in favour of the vaccination approach to curing an illness, unless people were to research the alternatives themselves - for which it has become easier to do so, with the advent of the internet.
Arguments from both sides have been perpetual in their delivery. Nobody has the definite answer as to what causes the problems that often arise in living things, and whilst curing an illness is vital - in whichever means one chooses, the most effective way is prevention. With our modern societies having developed as far as they have, prevention has become infinitely easier than it was a hundred years ago. As a consequence, it would be absurd to deny the correlation between our amelioration of health with our higher quality of life. Any suggestion that the higher quality of life is the absolute answer is probably foolish, and thus the debate will continue for as long as vaccinations, and their alternatives, exist.
