Why Copper Is The Preferred Material For Electrical Applications

Copper is used extensively throughout the electrical industry because it is extremely useful in the creation of wires and other electrical equipment

. There are a number of reasons that have led to the metals use for these types of applications, the main one being that copper in known for excellent electrical conductivity. There are many ways that the metal is used in wiring and the manufacture of electrical equipment, so lets take a closer look at them:

When copper is being prepared for use in electrical equipment and wiring, it is passed through a number of stages that strip the metal back and turn it into the kind of wiring that is required, for example:

Tinned wire: This wiring is used across the industrial sectors, such as overhead power lines for lights, heavy transit systems, subways, mine trains and so on.

Braided wire: This copper wiring is used for more compact applications, such as connecting switches in an electric stove, electrical appliances, storage batteries and so on.

Tinsel wire: This wiring is used in all sorts of telecommunication applications, such as speakers and tweeter coils, as it is useful in enhancing sound.

Whilst there are other types of copper wiring out there, the three outlined above are the most common ones found in industry today and the ones that you are most likely to come across.

As well as being a good conductor of electricity, copper wiring is renowned for its resistance to corrosion and its malleability. The orange, red or brown coloured wiring that we see when we pop open the back of a CD player or microwave is actually the colour of copper that has tarnished, which forms a protective layer between the metal and the elements. When other metals are bent and twisted into a particular shape, they are known to lose some of their integrity and are prone to cracks and other damage. Copper, on the other hand, can be bent and twisted endless without causing these problems.

Whilst copper is a favourite material for a number of applications (such as kitchen utensils, jewellery and even money), no other use comes close to the benefits that we receive when the metal is used for electrical applications. Can you imagine a world without electricity? So, no television, no mobile phone, no laptop computer? Probably not, and you have copper to thank for the fact that you have access to all of these products.
