Bait toxicants work by preventing the termite from growing a new skin; they are what are termed insect growth regulators (IGRs). Once exposed to the IGR the termite still sheds their old skin but there is no replacement skin underneath. Their skin acts as the barrier which holds the critical moisture in, so without a skin they are dead.
