For twelve out of the last thirteen years, this surgery (which is also called lipoplasty and suction lipectomy) has topped the charts as the number one most popular cosmetic surgery in America. Last year, nearly 350,000 Americans underwent this surgery even during the recession. As large as that number sounds, it actually shows a significant drop from the year before, when there were roughly 80,000 more clients.

A number of experts suggest that the numbers of people getting liposuction and other cosmetic surgeries is about to spike dramatically due to the recovering economy.

With this huge interest in lipoplasty, it is important that people know enough to get the best and safest results. Although the surgery is typically a rather safe one, serious injury and death can occur if it is not performed correctly.

One of the largest factors in determining the safety and success of your liposuction is which surgeon you pick. All plastic surgeons are not created equal. Just as in all trades, there are varying levels of skill, experience and training. However, unlike many trades, with a lipoplasty it's your body, your health and your life that you're putting on the table.

So, what should one know when looking for a good cosmetic surgeon? The first thing to remember is not to be in a rush. OF all the decisions that should not be rushed, the decision of who your lipectomy surgeon is pretty near the top of the list. Let yourself take time to find a surgeon that you are truly comfortable, and don't be discouraged if it takes you weeks or months to find one. Don't settle for someone that you're not comfortable with just because you are having trouble finding one you really like. A bad lipoplasty is worse than no lipoplasty.

Second, find out as much as you can about the doctors. Find out about their training, their schooling, about how much experience they have. How many liposuctions have they performed? How many have they performed on the specific target area you're looking at? What is their success ratio? How often do they have unhappy clients? Do they have any sort of compensation program if touch-up work is needed? What do you think of their before and after pictures? Upon meeting with them for a consultation, what sort of impression do they give you?

As much as possible, try to see if you can get this sort of information confirmed by an outside source. While this can be difficult, if you find discrepancies between the surgeon's accounts and outside accounts, you will know that something may be awry.

It may take some time to find an ideal surgeon, but your effort will be worth it.
