Why Does My Teacher Hate Me?

Why Does My Teacher Hate Me?

First of all, this is not part of an angsty teenager's blog, nor is this a cry for help. For some reason yet unexplained, your teacher or professor has decided he/she needs a punching bag and you're it. Although this is excellent subject matter for a sitcom, an unhealthy student/teacher relationship can be the cause of lower grades and loss in sanity. You may be feel discriminated or targeted and that he's (I'm using "he" for the sake of an example, and NOT because I had a difficult professor of that gender) verbally abusing you. So at this point you are asking yourself: "Why? Why me!?".

Three Possibilities.

1. You've made him angry with your actions or attitude.

First things first, look back on the possibility that you might of provoked his wrath. Are you always showing up late to class? Do you scoff at his teaching methods? Act like a know-it-all? Many readers are probably shaking their heads at each question, but, there are probably several of you that are slowly realizing that the problem may in fact be you. Although docking grades for poor behavior does not seem fair, imagine how you would react in his shoes. An educator's job is not an easy one, remember that. You do not get paid glamorously and usually do not get much respect. If you flagrantly show him your disinterest or boredom in his classes, he will not think very highly of you.

Solution: Make a conscious effort to be more respectable and a better student, at least in his class. Go the extra mile; hand in assignments early, do the extra-credit work, pay extra attention in class. The issue lies with the impression you leave with your professor. The more respect you show him, the more difficult it will be for him to pick on you.

2. He has got issues personally and he is taking it out on you.

So what if it isn't you're fault? You are convinced that you are a respectable, well-mannered student, but he is still going out of his way to make you feel bad. Why? He wants to make you feel as bad as he's feeling, kind of like a bully, except with glasses and a nice sweater vest. This could be because of one of two reasons. One, he might be going through some rough patch at home; a family member is sick, his marriage is shaky, his dog died, etc. So now, he has all these repressed emotions inside him, just ready to release it onto the first person he's remotely bothered by, ergo, you. Example: Have you ever had a professor who just went crazy anytime anyone yawned? Do you really think he has that big of a problem with a basic body function? No. He just feels angry with everyone and you just happen to stand out. Two, he sees you do much better in your career path than he did, and subconsciously resents you for it.

Solution: Again, showing respect is the key, even if you've been showing it from the beginning. Do not make the mistake of returning his hostility back at him, it will not solve anything and now he will have dirt on you. If he really does have personal issues, then it would be best to just lay low and not stand out in his class, but careful in not letting your grades slip.

3. Maybe he doesn't hate you...?

This one is short and sweet. Have you thought of the possibility that he actually doesn't hate you? Maybe he is a strict teacher with all his students, and you might be taking it personally? Look closely at the difference between a bad teacher and strict teacher. Some professors are just unpleasant people, and you're just going to have to get used to their way of teaching.

Solution: Don't take their tough love approach to teaching too personally, in the end, they do want you to reach your goals and willing to help you along the way.

Whatever reason it may be, if your professor is aggressively verbally abusing you or unfairly lowering your grades, you should do something about it. Save any exams or assignments you think were unfairly graded and bring it to the attention of the Dean / Faculty Head / Principal. Perhaps he has received other complaints and will take action.

Look on the bright side; you are now prepared to deal with this when it happens later in life. Trust me, this will not be the last person who's irritated by yawning.
