Why Dogs Scoot? The Reasons Behind This Reprehensible Habit

First and foremost, what is scooting? Scooting is the dragging of the anus with the hind limbs in an extended state. Scooting is basically an anal sac disease. The condition is caused by parasites that cause irritation to the anus region in the dog.
It is however not the parasite that alone that cause scooting in the case of dogs. Scooting may also occur without any parasite based etiological agent involved. For example, anal gland infections, tumors at the anus and injuries near the anal regions also may lead to the dragging of the anus region by the affected dogs.
An allergy to flea bite often causes irritation in the anus region and the animal may try to bite the anus region and the persistent irritation and biting may lead to the anus coming out.
Also tapeworms cause a condition called cestodiasis in dogs which can lead to scooting if not treated on time. Tapeworms will be noticed in the stool passed near the anus.
The movement and crawling of the tapeworm segments lead to severe itching at these regions. Hence, to have respite from this unrelenting itch, the dog places the anus region on the ground first and then tries to drag it on the floor while extending its rear limbs.
One should not just conclude that the scooting is caused by tapeworms. The veterinarian doctor must first conduct a test and rule it out.
Scooting is a cruel and embarrassing disease and should be treated as soon as possible when noticed in your dog.About the Author:
