In a very simple or basic switch the current flows if and only if it is in on position. The off position lets the circuit incomplete and thus no current flows through the circuit.

Whenever the gate is closed the contact is made and the current flows in the circuit. And whenever the gate is made open the current flow stops as the contact is now over. The fact is that there is no size limitation to describe a switch. It can be made incredibly small or very large in size. Also it is something which is not limited by its function. The switches are smart enough to operate number of functions and can also be used in number of electrical systems. Nowadays the switches are also equipped with the rubber mattings inside them in order to avoid their heating up and melting due to flow of high voltage current.
