Why, I think, I Gravitated to Black Men

I grew up in a mostly white suburb of Boston where diversity was not one of it's selling points. Looking back I don't remember any black kids in my public school which I attended through 3rd grade. I then was accepted to a great private school in a neighboring town and started there in 4th grade. Believe it or not, this, I think, was the first time I was really around black kids. Of course this was a smaller school but they pushed for a more diverse population and because you had to be accepted into this school they had more control over the actual make up of the kids.

Being a kid I didn't think of black kids as being any different. I knew they were just like me but they looked different. I was a pretty open minded kid and didn't judge people based on appearance or views. I just cared whether you were nice and if you played with me at recess. I was always an athletic kid. I was a ballerina until 5th grade and then I decided to give up dancing for sports. At my private school, sports weren't an option they were mandatory for all 3 seasons unless you were involved in a sport outside of school. Being the rambucious, high energy kid I was, I always wanted to race someone or play them in some type of sport. I started to notice that at recess all the boys would head over to the basketball court.
