Why Is Solar Panels Different That Other Energy Alternatives

There are new waves of energy alternatives these days. This energy alternatives was driven by many things which includes the perceived shortage of fossil fuel, the volatility of fuel market and also the fact that burning fossil fuel emit carbon dioxide to the atmosphere.

Some of these energy alternatives are wonderful while others are good on papers but never materialize. At the moment it is impractical to mass produce many of these solutions. For example a biogas plant which works by capturing methane from waste from either live stock or municipal waste can never match a single 2000 MW coal plant in terms of price per Megawatt as well as reliability factor. There simply no chicken or cattle feed, or municipal landfill that are big enough to produce that kind of power.

When you talk about electricity demand throughout the day, these fossil fuel power plants is always used as a base load, which mean they will be on all the time, 24 hours a day. These plants are only went offline when there are scheduled maintenance which as it called scheduled and planned, and preventive maintenance which are pretty rare. These plants are also the cheapest to run.

The same can not be said about energy alternatives, their net capacity factor are only 65% at maximum and some of them are not exactly the cheapest to run, which is ironic considering their fuel is almost free. This is mainly due to their relatively new technology. If we go back to the biogas example, a normal generator set works like trucks engine, any mechanic can open the hood and will understand right away the guts that make it run. A biogas generator set however is a whole lot different story, there is sulfur, moisture, methane content itself that needs to be looked at. Long story short preventive or scheduled maintenance for these biogas generator set are much more expensive than its diesel counterpart which mean cost per Kwh sent are also much more expensive. This is also true for biogas, geothermal and even winds

So energy alternatives are no good then? Not quite, Solar panel is one of the most researched alternative energy. It is been tested and looked over by many scientists around the world.

Why aren't we all using solar power by now? Well, though it is not theoretically expensive, it still plagued by the same drawback that it can not be built big enough in one central location.

So what are solar panels good for then? Distributed energy, which should be the way of the future if we want to be self sufficient.
