Why It Is Important To Believe In Yourself
Clothes have always played an important role in my life
. My parents told me that I started playing dress up when I was about four, stealing clothes from my mother's closet. Then there was time for making little copies of couture dresses for fashion shows for my dolls, followed by asserting my independence in first grade when I started choosing my own outfits to wear to school. My parents allowed it, believing that I have a right to pick my clothes and nobody, not even them, should tell me what is and what is not okay.
Because of my strong sense of fashion, I often faced being laughed at in the first years, and even had to spend some time in detention for getting into arguments over my clothes. But when we moved from a small town to a big city the summer before I started high school, everything changed. I suddenly wasn't the weird girl in crazy outfits, but one of the trend setters. I felt free to experiment and found friends who had a similar passion. I knew I wanted to try and become somebody in the fashion world.
I looked into different offers from colleges with fashion majors as well as design institutes, and decided to live at home and enroll in a nearby fashion school. To make money for fabrics and trimmings necessary to create my own clothes, I got a job at a fancy little boutique specializing in couture dresses. What is incredible, is that from a practical side I learned much more in the shop than during classes.
School, however, taught me a lot about the business of fashion. I learned all aspects of putting together a couture collection, like getting the right space, employing workers, keeping books, dealing with distributors and even finding partners who would bring in financial support. School also had a network of alumni who offered support either by sharing their knowledge or by taking students in for internships. All together the experience gained in school, in the boutique where I worked and during the internships got me ready to face the tough real world.
So right now I am in the process of creating my very first couture collection. I took care of business, starting with preparing a business plan and convincing a couple of people to part with their money until I become a great success. Then I found a large space, which now serves as a working area but when all the couture dresses and jackets and pants and what not are ready, it will be transformed into a show room. And I asked some talented students to help me out with the sewing.
Part of my couture fashion collection is ready, but there is still a long way to go before it's finished. I am not afraid of the hard work and final test ahead of me, though, because I know I'm well prepared. And I'm talking not only about school and practice, but also about those years I spent fighting for my fashion, because I know that as long as I believe that what I create is great, it is great, no matter what others say.
