Why Keep Promises to Yourself and to Others

Why Keep Promises to Yourself and to Others

Many of us consistently fail to keep our promises to ourselves and to others for a myriad of different reasons. We tend to rationalize and minimize this negative behavior, and totally dismiss our accountability for such actions. Many people choose to take the path of the least or no resistance when it comes to committing to their oaths to themselves and to others; therefore the goal is seldom achieved. In this article I will suggest to you six positive and beneficial reasons, why you should keep your promises to yourself and to others, that you begin applying in your life today.

The first reason is; it builds trust within you and your progressive relationships. You will experience a special bond with people in your most important and closest relationships once they know and recognize you are a person of your word. They will come to respect and depend on you. You will be viewed as a person of positive action, truthfulness and integrity. In the absence of trust, there isn't any progression in any relationship.

The second reason is; it super enhances your self confidence and your personal belief system within you. In other words it greatly bolsters self concept or self image. Your accomplishments no matter their magnitude will be the building blocks and the energy or fuel for your continued success, which are significant factors in elevating your confidence level. Nothing replaces feeling great about you.

The third reason is; it will continuously build your character. Character is one of the most essential components of your moral fiber. It gives you strength and endurance. Character gives you the substance, discipline and the determination to follow through on your oath until it is completed. Character will greatly assist you with your commitments.

The fourth reason is; it will establish your legacy for future your generations. You will set the example as a person of action, and remembered as a person who got things done. You would have planted the seeds for your future generations to grow and prosper if they were to emulate you. This type of legacy is priceless.

The fifth reason is; it will elicit creativity you never knew had in you. You will find creative ways to keep your promises when they seem to be overwhelming and unattainable. It other words you will use your unlimited progressive imagination and find ways to ultimately succeed in fulfilling your oaths. You will take pride in the fact that you will be consistently using your boundless brain power and ingenuity.

The sixth one is; it will exponentially add purpose and positive direction in your life. When you awake every morning, there is no guest work to what you should do. Your purpose for that day will be to continue to work on completing your oath to yourself as well as to others, and to follow it through until its completion. There is no substitute for having a perpetual progressive purpose in your life.

In summary keeping your promises will build trust and fortify your most important relationships. It will significantly add to your confidence level. It will continuously build your character. Your legacy will be forever enhanced because of it. Your creativity will constantly grow and flourish. Your purpose and meaning in life will be crystal clear.

I'll leave you with one final thought; it is an excerpt from one of the great poems by the poet Robert Frost. It is from his poem, "Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening".

"The woods are lovely, dark and deep,

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep".
