fluorescent lamps are currently being marketed as nature friendly because of their reduced consumption of electricity. When such fluorescent lighting bulbs are cold, mercury in the bulb remains in liquid form; however, as we use the bulb and the heat inside rises it is transformed in vapor or gaseous form. Mercury in vapor form is extremely toxic, even small amount of mercury can result in severe respiratory problems, kidney damage, brain damage, etc. may result in many other and different kinds of severe medical problems.

Another disadvantage with fluorescent lighting is that if broken it can lead to various hazardous things. Depending on the bulb type, there may be some partial vacuum or the bulb may have pressure. If the glass is broken it can lead to injuries related to shrapnel, coupled with the release of hazardous compounds such as mercury. The biggest threat when the fluorescent lighting bulb is broken can be from the glass which is phosphor-coated glass. If any phosphor gets near the wound it prevents blood clotting and also will interfere with the healing of the wound.

Apart from the above mentioned facts or effects, you may find a lot many hazardous effects of using fluorescent lighting bulbs over the internet. Regulators and manufacturers have taken several steps to eliminate these problems with the use of LED lighting. In United States, the latest Energy Star criterion for integrated replacement lamps of LED include requirement for 150 Hz operation. So go ahead and use LED lighting which is safer compared with traditional fluorescent lighting.
