Why Large Artificial Trees? Discover how to select the right treesand how to install them into large buildings.
Large Artificial Trees for interior uses: how to install them, which ones are the most suitable for different locations along with more facts worth knowing to help you save time, save money and guidance on choosing the best and most suitable artificial trees for your business needs.
People love plants and feel comfortable around them. For hundreds and thousands of years humans and plants have lived in harmony: since time when mankind's ancestors roamed the Serengeti. Recent research has shown flowers, plants and trees play an important role in peoples lives because they act as a soothing catalyst between technology and nature, a contrast between hard, stark and bland to soft, non conforming and colourful; and between abstract tension and calm relaxation.
Over generations plants played natures important role in supplying a source for food, fire, shelter, medicines and building structures, tools and a material for constructing means of transportation. So now, apart from the role of plants in the food chain and in special cases for medication derivatives their main function of plants and trees is for cosmetic uses, and this is where the benefits of good quality artificial plants and trees play an important role.
Over the years various findings have shown peoples stress levels and blood pressure in the presence of plants has reduced. People feel comfortable around plants. Plants play an important role in work places, offices, public spaces and hospitals etc. People often take comfort from the soothing presence of plants. Similarly plants play an important calming role in locations where peoples stress levels often increase as a result of frustrating factors associated with large busy places like airports, shopping malls, rail and bus stations etc.
Not only do large artificial trees provide the WOW! Effect their imposing, majestic the soothing presence adds character, interest and divine status to many large internally spacious buildings.
The most popular varieties of large interior artificial trees are green and variegated ficus (weeping fig), capensia, cherry blossom, bougainvillea, wisteria, weeping willow, olive, red and green maple, oak, beech, birch, bay laurel and longifollia. Of course there are other large specimens in form of bamboo, washingtonia, date, phoenix and coconut palms. The choice is varied, majestic and interesting but there is always something to compliment, enhance and promote any venue.
Create the unexpected - people when they think of tree shapes, something resembling a generalised outline of a lollypop on a stick come to mind.
Every species of tree has a unique leaf, branch and particularly canopy shape. In nature fresh trees owing to climate and prevailing winds take on their own form as they adapt to these persistent natural conditions. Similar effects can be recreated when building bespoke large artificial trees in various shapes and forms.
Clients often ask for large artificial trees to fit into corners, flat against walls, with non-symmetrical and "wind" swept shaped canopies. The advantage of artificial large trees is they can be made to accommodate any shape, size, style and location.
Access How does one get a big tree, 7 meters high with 3 to 4 meters diameter canopy, giant bamboo up to 15 meters high or 7 meters high palms which obviously won't fit through a 2 meter wide double door access, up and around stairways then to possibly negotiate fire doors?
So how is it done? Well trees don't come with bendy trunks and branches neither do they have crushable canopies.
The simple answer is by providing all the varieties, in all the large sizes and in all the styles in "kit form". This means large trees up to 7m high are delivered to site in manageable boxes ready for easy assembly.
The tree structure, materials and leaves - the tree trunks and branches used are natural kiln dried wood from tree plantations which are groomed as part of their renewable regeneration management program. Internal steel reinforcement and steel tubular extension joints are fitted to ensure strong construction and easy assembly. Leaves are made using man made polyester silk fabric: hence the reason why artificial plants are often referred to as silk plants. Modern processing techniques allows for perfect colour, shading and leaf characteristics, which are realistic reproductions of the real thing. Improved production techniques now allows the
artificial leaves to be inherently fire resistant which is now a requirement for interior artificial plants and trees for public places.
Owing to the solid weight of real large diameter tree trunks, especially those, which have natural interesting bark textures, such as olives, many large artificial trees are reproduced using an extremely realistic process using GRP (fibreglass). GRP trunks are strong, light, hollow and easy to handle.
Inherent fire retardant foliage sprays, artificial leaves, are now available on many species of large artificial trees and plants. "Spray" is a term used to describe a small "fan" shaped branch of leaves, around 18 inches (45cm) long with up to 35 leaves depending on the variety. The sprays are stiffened using steel wire, which into turn is coated with coloured and textured fire proof PVC. The internal wire allows the leaves to be shaped and retain their form.
Regulations require artificial plants and trees which are installed into public spaces such as hotels, restaurants, shopping centres, airports, swimming pools etc. to have valid fire certificates which satisfy the required standards for testing flame proof plants.
Inherently Fire Resistant interior plants provide peace of mind.
Firesilx is a registered brand which provides an exclusive range of inherently fire retardant products. Inherently fire proof artificial leaves have been tested by numerous fire departments world-wide. A British Standard (BS EN 1021-1:2006 and BS EN 1021-2:2006) fire certificate is provided for each Firesilx product purchased form plantART. The fire resistant properties are part of the manufacturing production process of both the foliage and PVC parts.
The protection is not sprayed onto the product, or the product dipped into fire retardant water based soluble chemical solution. This was a former process which gave leaves an oily film and resulted in dust collection. So, it's easy to understand why an Inherent Fire Resistant product is now a money saving process which requires less frequent leaf cleaning and the necessity for re- fire proofing the artificial leaves. This is an important factor to consider particularly when specifying large commercial projects in terms of both on going maintenance costs and disruption to business operations.
Installation fitting large trees into free standing containers or pre-built planters.
Large artificial trees in "kit form" construction is a revolutionary method of providing large trees into areas which often have restricted access. It is quicker, safer and easier to handle without the need for staff experienced in handling large heavy items and no need for specialised lifting equipment.
Assembly is like a simple 3D jig saw. All the parts, branches and trunks are marked and numbered. The bases of the branches are shaped to slot into pre-made holes on the main trunk and secured using a single stainless steel screw. The joins are easily concealed using matching wood coloured filler, which is very similar to plasticine.
Once all the branches are in place and the tree canopy is formed the next job is to shape up the leaf sprays. The internal wires allow the leaves to be shaped and retain their form.
It is easier to shape up the lower leaves then to work up and around in sections. Periodically step back to check the canopy shape is symmetrical.
It is recommended to take advice and guidance on selecting the right trees for the purpose they are intended before buying. And yes, risk assessments; equally important practical, safety and installation information, which can help in the buying decision and being more, prepared.
Particular care most be taken when installing the larger trees where scaffolding or a "cherry picker will be required especially when working on trees above 3.50m and up to the 7.0m (22ft) and for the Artificial Giant Bamboo 15.0m (47ft). Obviously staff safety and the safety of others, whether working off larders or any access equipment especially in public spaces, have to be considered.
Shaping the leaves on the lower branches of the large trees and tree canopies on the trees up to 3.0m high can be shaped probably using a stepladder. However, always assess the risk and consider the experience of personal carrying out the installation.
Containers, large choice of styles, colours and sizes suitable to support large trees are available. The container height, diameter and the amount of ballast needed will be determined by the size and weight of the tree. It is important to ensure the base of the tree is securely set and sealed into the container.
In locations with high foot falls clients often opt for pre-made raised and sunken planters or planters integrated into seating are considered in many locations such as shopping malls, airports, swimming pools etc. to support large artificial trees.
Cleaning - The foliage, artificial leaves, are colourfast. The quality of the artificial leaf textures, shapes and colours thanks to the continuing innovative ideas and technology are so real to life both visually and to touch.
Cleaning, generally is by "dusting" however not every leaf individual, but just general sweeping over using a feather duster or similar. Fortunately modern air conditioning units operate superior air filtration systems therefore internal locations that have large enough capacity to hold large trees are now so much cleaner. Since mid 2007 smoking in enclosed public places was banned. This has helped considerably to preserve clean air and the effects of smoke, which causes long term leaf discoloration and staining.
Carriage costs for delivering big trees, especially the large artificial trees up to 7.0m high, are considerably reduced now that they are boxed in "kit form". Thus easier to handle and less risk of damage is often an important consideration which now means more operators are specifying large artificial tree, bamboo and palms for their venues.
