Poker hands maybe ranked into several separate groups, known as theHoldem ranking. The list below enumerates the variations from the most powerful combination to the least powerful one.

The Holdem ranking that starts at the beginning of this list beats everything under it.

Royal Flush This is the best and unbeatable poker hand. It is also a variation of the straight flush which consists of five cards from Ace Ten in the same suit.


Straight Flush - These are five cards in a sequence in the same suit. Royal Flushes are unbeatable.

Four of A Kind These are four cards of equal rank with a card on the side called a kicker. Kickers are cards that complete a combination but are really not needed in the game.

Full House These are poker hands that come in two groups: a group of three and a group of two that are both of equal rank.

Flush These are five cards in the same suit but are not in any order.

Straight These are cards that are in order but not in the same suit. Aces are the only ones in this case that may be used in both high and low positions. Example: A,2,3,4,5, or A,K,Q,J,T.

Three of A Kind These consist of three cards of the same rank plus two kickers or side cards.

Two Pair These consist of two pairs of cards of equal rank with one kicker.

One Pair These contain a pair of cards plus three kickers or side cards.

High Cards These are poker hands that do not fall into any of the categories previously enumerated.

A player who only knowsHoldem rankings and the rules of the game may be setting himself up to fail without a good knowledge of the workable poker hands that can be used at showdown.

Knowing the various poker hands available, as well as how they rank against other poker hands is already a good strategy in itself. A player educated on this may plan ahead and recognize the poker hands and Holdem rankings so he can form his strategy and thus bet accordingly.
