Why Relying On Totally Free Stuff Wont Help Your Business
Ive been hearing it a lot lately and its really starting to get on my nerves
. Its a word...and it starts with the letter F.
Calm down...its not that F word.
Actually, I dont have a problem with that F word at all.
Theres a show I like to watch called Inside the Actors Studio. James Lipton is the host and he interviews famous actors about their lives and careers. At the end of the show, he has a series of questions that he asks every guest. I have my answers all ready to those questions, in fact Ive had them ready for years.
Although I have to say, I think Im about to change my answer to one of those questions. The question is: What is your least favorite word?
If Mr. Lipton asked me that question today, I would say Free
If I hear one more person tell me but its free or I just want totally free stuff Im going to absolutely lose my mind.
What is the obsession people have...in particular business owners...with totally free stuff?
Now, I know they say the best things in life are free. Im not going to argue about that too much. There is some truth to that. Although I think air should be free and I just paid 75 cents for it at the gas station. So I guess thats one less thing that is free.
In any event, while I will admit there are many great things in life that are free, there are many things in life worth paying for. Quality and education are two of them.
Yet, so many people are stuck on totally free stuff.
If youre serious about taking it to the top in any area in life, at some point youre going to have to get out of the free zone and stop relying on totally free stuff.
For some reason, people get it in their heads that free means better. No it doesnt. It just means youre getting something for nothing, or in most cases...getting nothing of nothing. Nine times out of ten, it means youre getting exactly what you are paying for.
So, before you place too much value on getting totally free stuff, take a second to evaluate how it fits into your big picture. How is it going to help you be successful and reach your goals?
How is it going to expand your business?
Dont get me wrong, utilizing free tools and resources is great and certainly has a place in any business plan. But it shouldnt be to the exclusion of everything else.
Improving your skills, growing in your craft, and expanding your business are necessary if you want your business to be successful.
And its not always going to be free.
When it comes right down to it, you have to ask yourself, how much are you worth? How much is success worth to you? You are investing in yourself, your business and your future. So there will come a time when you will have to stop relying on totally free stuff.
I suppose there are some people who truly believe that they can skate through life getting everything for free. I have no doubt that they can. But its not the people sitting at the top.
Nope, the most successful people are those who appreciate the value in investing in themselves and have no problem walking away from totally free stuff.
