Why Some Firms Are Still Opting To Contract Their Brochure Printing, While They Could Do It In-House Through DTP

These days, it is possible, with the help of a simple computer and cheap Desktop

Publishing (DTP) software, to produce for yourself the sort of graphic merchandize and stationery you would have had to pay lots of money for before. We all recall how the situation was, less than fifteen years ago. Then, if you were looking to get some brochure printing job done, you would inevitably have had to visit one of the firms that were in that line of business, paid them a hefty price, and most probably, waited for them to do the job at their convenience.' Even if all you wanted, in terms of brochure printing was a relatively easy job, that would have to be the procedure because the software and the hardware for the job was the preserve of those printing industry elites.

Then came the PC revolution, and everything changed. Everybody could make their own brochures (and other wares of that type), from the comfort of their desk, using their PC and desktop printers. And in the wake of these changes, many firms started opting to do things like simple brochure printing in-house. This, they reckoned, would be both cost-effective and convenient.

It is from such a background, then, that the expected thing' nowadays is for the typical firm to be doing most of its brochure printing in-house, using these tools of technology, and only subcontracting the jobs that turn out to be beyond its capabilities due to technical complexity. Yet, that trend notwithstanding, we still see firms that insist on having all their brochure printing jobs contracted to the printing firms. And that begs the question as to why it is the case, in this day and age.

Several reasons can be postulated, as being behind the situation where, the availability of cheaper and more convenient desktop publishing tools notwithstanding, some firms still opt to contract all their brochure printing jobs to outside firms.

First is the fact that not everybody knows about the evolution/easy availability of these desktop publishing technologies. There are therefore many firms in which awareness on the fact that they can get their brochure printing jobs done in-house hasn't yet penetrated. It is not that they wouldn't be interested: it is just that they don't know about it. And a technology is only useful to you to the extent that you, at the very least, know about its existence.

Second is the fact that some firms have been misguided to believe that operating desktop publishing is too complex so that their staff can't do it. The true position is that virtually anybody who can use a computer can do desktop publishing (although, to be sure, the desktop publishing packages are bit more complex than others). Still, they don't require specialist help in getting simple tasks done, although many people mistakenly hold that view.

Third is the fact that some firms are extremely quality conscious' and believe that the quality of their brochure printing jobs will deteriorate if they decide to do them in-house. The true position is that these desktop publishing tools that are at their disposal are pretty much the same tools used by the commercial printers nowadays. Therefore with the right degree of keenness, there is no reason as to why the quality of brochure printing done in-house should be poor, compared to that done by the commercial printers.
