Why Take Supplements For Vitamin D?
Vitamin D is one of the most widely available nutrients and one of the few that our body can make on its own, yet many of us are still lacking in it
. This is likely due to the fact that we are constantly using D and not replenishing it fast enough. Supplements for Vitamin D are a great way to make sure you're getting the D you need without stressing over your diet or your time in the sun.
Why Do We Need D?
Many people think we outgrow the need for vitamin D as we age, but this couldn't be further from the truth. Although we associate Vitamin D with children and the development of strong teeth and bones, our need for D doesn't stop at age 18.
Vitamin D helps our bodies absorb calcium, which we use throughout our lives to protect our bones from fractures and diseases like osteoporosis. But D is an important stand-alone nutrient too. It helps regulate the immune system and the neuromuscular system and plays a preventative role in heart disease, diabetes and several types of cancer. Some might argue that these preventative functions are proof that we need to keep up our daily dose of D! And they may be right. Think about it this way - Vitamin D is so crucial to our body that we make it ourselves, through exposure to the sun!
Finding Enough D
Although vitamin D is easily available through sunlight it is not so easily found in the foods we eat. That makes it all too easy to fall short of this vital nutrient if you're stuck indoors all day (as many of us increasingly are!). Even if you do spend a good amount of time outside every day, you're probably not getting enough D. The simple fact is that if you live in a northern climate the sun just isn't strong enough to help your body produce the D it needs all year long. And if you live in a southern climate, you're probably extra vigilant about sunscreen and are blocking the sun's rays, which your body needs to make vitamin D.
Getting D though diet alone presents another challenge, especially for vegetarians and those who have trouble absorbing D through food. You can find it in milk, including lactose-free milk. Many types of fish are plentiful in Vitamin D including sardines, trout and mackerel. Egg yolks are another good choice for getting your D. You can look for D-fortified grains and breads. Beyond that, you're going to have trouble finding it in food.
Supplements for Vitamin D Help Where Sunshine and Diet Cannot
Supplements offer an alternative way to make sure you're getting the D you need to be healthy. They make it easy to receive the nutrients we need in a convenient and concentrated form. Rather than trying to figure out how much Vitamin D you've consumed through diet or how much time you need to spend in the sun every day, a quick look at the supplement packaging can tell you how much D you'll receive in one dose and how much of that meets your recommended daily allowance.
Always remember to discuss your nutritional needs with your physician or health care provider. They can help you determine how much extra D you need and what the best method is for you to achieve it.
