Why Use Google Tag Management?

With Google telling us that the speed in which our page loads is quite important

and with us needing a lot of code to our websites to help us track visitors and improve the experience we provide our customers, which could tend to be quite overwhelming and may result in long loading time, Googles free new tool, Google Tag Manager is here to save the day.

Google Tag Manager is a free tool that enables you to manage tags conveniently (such as tracking and marketing optimization JavaScript tags) on your site.

Google Tag Manager basically enables you to enter all your tags in one location, define on which page or pages a particular tag should appear, add and update them instead of editing site code and then the magic of Google does the rest.

How Does Google Tag Manager Work?

All you need is to create a new Tag Manager account to be able to use it. You will also still need all your other Google accounts like Analytics, AdWords, and the like.

Once your Google Tag Manager account is created, create your tags in each of the Google products youre using like Analytics, AdWords, and the like.

Paste the generated code from those Google products into a Tag Manager container instead of pasting them directly into your website.

add rules for how the tag is to be used on your site

copy the code that requests all the tags from Google Tag Manager to your site

Once a visitor comes to your site, the Tag Manager code contacts Google's servers and downloads the Tag Manager script, a file named gtm.js. which has a cache time of 15 minutes. So, once the initial request is made for the gtm.js file, you will not need to make additional requests.

As the Tag Manager code is requested asynchronously, the code will load while other elements of your page continue to load with no waiting. After downloading the GTM script, it will render and fire off all the pixels and code needed to track the services you set up.

Why Do You Need Tag Management?

Google Tag Manager is said to be particularly useful if you manage more than one site that each uses multiple tags.

Also, Google Tag Manager helps you eliminate problems such as the bogging down or the getting slow and clunky of your site due to all that too many codes, distortion of your measurement and results in duplicate costs, or missing data which is due to redundant or incorrectly applied tags. It is time-consuming for the IT department or webmaster team to add new tags. With this manger, you can run your important marketing and measurement campaigns easily when you need them.
