that their selection of cigars stays properly humidified and protected from the environment. An unprotected cigar will eventually dry out, resulting in a less than enjoyable smoke. However, even using a humidor is not always proof against disaster. What do you do if you find that your humidor wont maintain 72% humidity?

One reason that humidors might fail to maintain the proper humidity level is simple theyre not seasoned. If your humidor is new, you need to season it before you start storing your cigars or youll find that the cedar actually dries your cigars out faster. Seasoning your humidor only takes about two days (48 hours), and a few simple steps. If you havent seasoned your humidor, do that first before trying anything else.

Another reason that a humidor might not be able to maintain 72% humidity is the climate in your geographic area. If you have a very dry climate, your humidor might not be sealing well enough to protect your cigars against drying. You can do several things to help in this instance. If your humidor is small enough, try wrapping it in plastic wrap, which will prevent moisture from escaping. You can also opt to buy a new one with a better seal around the lid (some people also recommend slightly wetting the wood around the edge of the lid so it swells and seals better).

You might also need to check your hygrometer. If the gauge is reading incorrectly, your humidor might be maintaining the necessary 72% humidity, and you just dont realize it. If your cigars feel and taste fine, but your readings are a bit off, try calibrating your hygrometer. Follow the directions from the manufacturer to calibrate it and then let it sit long enough to get an accurate reading. If it works, then your problem is solved.

Finally, you might find that your problem is an old, worn out humidor. If you bought a used model that wasnt cared for properly by the previous owner, it might be time to upgrade. Depending on your cigar storage needs, you can find some very affordable models on the market that offer plenty of protection and can maintain that 72% humidity on a constant basis, saving you money and frustration with ruined cigars.
