Why You Should Get Lasik

Every year over one million Americans who wear glasses or contacts choose to correct their vision through Lasik

. Lasik in Los Angeles is the most common type of laser eye surgery, an eye surgery designed to correct vision problems- myopia, hyperopia, and astigmatism- through the use of an excimer laser. An excimer laser is an ultraviolet laser capable of altering the curvature of a cornea, allowing the eye surgeon to manipulate the cornea in such a way that the patients eyesight is perfected to the point he or she does not need to wear neither glasses nor contacts anymore.

The excimer laser will laser off a very thin flap from the outer layer of the cornea, leaving one end of the flap still attached to the cornea. The eye surgeon will then ablate predetermined areas of the newly exposed areas of the cornea. Ablating means that the eye surgeon will remove certain parts of the cornea with the laser- ablating the center of the eye will reduce the curvature of the cornea and ablating the areas away from the center of the cornea will make it more curved. Reducing the curvature of the cornea will correct nearsighted (myopic) vision and increasing the curvature of the cornea will correct farsightedness (hyperopic) vision.

Once the surgeon has modified the cornea to its predetermined shape, he or she will reposition the flap over the cornea where it will heal via natural adhesion. The Lasik procedure is relatively quick- it only takes about one or two minutes per eye to complete the Lasik procedure.

Although there is somewhat of a large price tag associated with the upfront costs of Lasik- it typically costs about two grand to correct one eye with Lasik, the overall costs of Lasik in the long run pale in comparison to the costs of glasses and/or contacts. It has been estimated by the American Refractive Surgery Council that for contact wearers, a typical one-year supply of contacts at $70 per box would cost you about $560, and for people who wear glasses, a new pair of glasses usually costs about $150, with costs doubling if you need special glasses such as glasses for reading. And these costs do not even include the eye exams and other contact lens/glasses supplies that are needed to maintain your vision health through contacts or glasses.

Basically, for people who wear contacts, getting Beverly Hills Lasik will pay for itself within approximately 8 years and people who get Lasik after wearing glasses will have that procedure pay for itself in less than twenty years. So for people who plan on wearing their contacts for longer than 8 years and for people who plan on wearing their glasses for longer than 20 years should really consider undergoing a Lasik procedure. The amount of money you could save in the long run, as well as the benefit of never having to worry about the typical hassles of contacts and/or glasses, is well worth the initial investment cost of Lasik.
