Why You Should Keep Self Defense Basic
Instead of settling for self defense videos that try and make a simple art as difficult
as a rocket science exam in Latin, spend your money on something that cuts through all the misinformation and contradictory advice you hear from so-called martial arts experts. If you need a video to protect yourself then chances are you are a novice. You would think that these companies would take this into account and release something that is relevant to the newcomer. Instead, you see a rash of videos that show hundreds of moves and complex combinations which confuse and frustrate the trainee who quits. This is because such businesses don't care about results, all they want is your money,
Scout around online for self defense videos that are tailored to the needs of someone who has never thrown a punch in anger before. This means that the techniques shown are short, sharp and basic. For example, the almost clichd self defense move the groin kick is actually still the most effective move available. Yet you should not be focusing on hitting your attacker there, at least not initially. While it may always be at the back of your mind, attack in areas that they may not expect such as the stomach or ribs. They will have to focus on defending these vulnerable areas which means they will eventually be open for that shuddering kick to the groin. It doesn't have to be a clean contact. With reasonable force, your strike will drop any attacker like a stone allowing you to get away.
One of the maneuvers that can be used to distract the thug whilst you plot their groin related downfall is the poke in the eye. You should cast aside any preconceived notions about this self defense move. You do not have to use only two fingers and be extremely accurate. You can use every digit on both hands, even your thumbs though as the shortest digits they will not be useful if your middle or index fingers connect first. This is a move that can be performed by anyone and it will blind your attacker once you connect.
Another really basic but effective move is slapping their ears. Not only is a powerful blow to the ear really painful, it also messes up the attacker's balance which leaves them open for further counter attacking moves. Although slapping their ears will not send them crashing to the ground, it will cause them to become disorientated. Remember, in self defense victory' is not achieved by beating the attacker senseless, it comes from surviving the ordeal in one piece.
As you can see, the art of defending one's self is nowhere near as complicated as many commercial self defense videos make it seem. Trying to learn too many moves at once is overwhelming for any beginner. You are not trying to reinvent the wheel when it comes to standing up for yourself, a simple strike to the ears, eyes or groin is as effective as any flying kick when it comes to foiling an attack.
