Why You Should Visit Wadi Rum

Located in the southern part of Jordan, Wadi Rum is well-known for its pink sand and high mountains

The road that goes to Wadi Rum is to the east off the Desert Highway, approximately 25 kilometers north of Aqaba. The road goes for about 35 kilometers to the village of Rum. It's best to have your own means of transportation because public transportation is not always available.

Wadi Rum is right within the desert, which means that you will be cut off from many modern amenities. Yet this does not minimize its charm in any way. Although this is a desert area, you should carry things to protect yourself from cold because of the mountains.

You will experience the life of the local Bedouin who live in camps scattered in the desert. At the village of Rum, you will find some of these people living in both concrete houses and goat-hair tents. This is where the Desert Patrol has its headquarters. There are also a few shops at the village.

Accommodation is available at the Government Rest House, where you can also rent a jeep to explore other parts of Wadi Rum. If you are taking relatively short trips, you can hire a camel instead.

If you are more adventurous, you may carry out your exploration by hiking. It is when you explore on foot that you will experience the true silence of the desert. You do not need much for your hiking. The important things are a pair of good shoes, a sleeping bag, some food and much water.

You can explore Wadi Rum by using a combination of these methods. For instance, you can use a four-wheel drive jeep to explore many places without exhausting yourself and reserve your energy to hike special sites.

If you are up to the challenge, you can climb one of the highest mountain in the country, the Jabal Rum. The trip to the summit takes about ten hours, and you need a guide to accompany you. Make prior arrangements at the Government Rest House.

Apart from the silence that will help you to relax, Wadi Rum offers you some spectacular scenes that contrast the pink desert with surrounding mountains. Wind has eroded the mountain cliffs over the years, adding a special appeal. One of the most special experiences you will have is climbing the rock Bridge. You will also enjoy the hospitable nature of the locals.
