Why care brokerage is important

It's a daunting task trying to choose a care home for yourself or a loved one

. There is so much information around, which often leaves people perplexed as to what kind of care they need, and where they should be choosing to live.

That's how care brokerage can help; it matches the person in need of care with people who can help, providing options and advising which ones are most suitable.

The first thing to do, if you think the person in question should move to a care home, is to contact your local authority. They will help you decide whether moving to a care home is necessary and if so, help you find a home and calculate the extent of the financial support and care you need. If the person in question can afford to pay for the care home then they don't need to deal with the local authority, but it's always advisable in case they are entitled to help financially.

The local authority will assess a person's needs, which could be carried out by a nurse, social worker, occupational therapist or similar healthcare professional. They will find out what the person has difficulty doing, what they would like to be able to do, what help they already get and why they want to move into a home.

When deciding on a home, the choice should always be guided by the care needs of the person in question.

Care homes are popular because there are trained staffs on site, day and night, to look after residents the moment they need to. However, there are other factors that will help a decision be made.

You should find out whether there are leisure and recreation facilities at the home; if there are planned days out; whether entertainers come; and if there are any clubs for residents to enjoy.

Care homes should allow residents to be as physically active as they wish, allow relatives to visit freely, respect religious and cultural values and listen to the input of residents when running the home.

Don't decide on a home without visiting it, or putting questions to the people in charge. If it's not a transparent home, you should walk away from it. A good arrangement is to agree on a trial period, which will allow the care home to be used but all parties can walk away easily if it doesn't work.
