Previously, while showing in Minneapolis, Wicked broke box office records and sold out in quick period of time. This is all with good reason; it has been the recipient of a Grammy as well as three Tony Awards and continues to be one of the most popular musicals currently running on Broadway.

Wicked premiered at the Curran Theatre in San Francisco in 2003 and it opened on Broadway that same fall. Very quickly it started breaking box office records, becoming a favorite of theater patrons. The show was ultimately nominated for 10 Tony Awards and took home three. Since its initial premiere, Wicked has appeared on stages around the world including the U.K., Japan, Germany and Australia.

Wicked features songs and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz and is based on the popular novel by Gregory Maguire called Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West. Maguire's book built upon the famous story by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, only Maguire writes it from the point of the view of the witches.

Audience members follow the life of Elphaba, the one who would go onto become the Wicked Witch of the West, who is a student at Shiz University. It is here she meets Glinda, a strikingly beautiful and popular girl, who would go onto become Glinda the Good. Although the two students start out their relationship as rivals, they eventually develop a deep and understanding friendship with one another.

In the Land of Oz, Elphaba and Glinda discuss their love interests, viewpoints on policies and what can be done about the Wizard's exceedingly corrupt government. Ultimately the musical winds up with Elphaba's fall from grace and the arrival of Dorothy from Kansas, whose house accidently lands on Elphaba's sister NessaRose, the Wicked Witch of the East. The musical is especially interesting to fans of the Wizard of Oz, who will love the references to popular scenes from the 1939 film starring Judy Garland.

Wicked boasts an elaborate set design and fantastical costumes. It also features an array of popular musical numbers like "No One Mourns the Wicked," "Dancing Through Life," "Popular," "I'm Not that Girl" and "As Long as You're Mine." The production is a popular choice for people of all ages and it is especially interesting to have an inside glimpse into what might have happened in the Land of Oz before Dorothy and her little dog met up with the Scarecrow, the Tin Man and the Cowardly Lion.
