Will Laid Off Airline Pilots Sabotage AI Autonomous Aircraft to Keep Their Jobs for Safety Reasons
?
Well, I believe we will because it is a lot easier to fly a plane with no obstacles in the way, than it is to drive a car with obstacles and dangers everywhere in close proximity. Interestingly enough, we do have unmanned aerial vehicles which are telerobotic, and we also have unmanned aerial vehicles which are able to do a good portion of their mission completely autonomous.
This brings about another question and that has to do with the unions and the airlines. Will airline pilots get upset that their jobs are being replaced by robots? Interestingly enough, many airlines now only have two pilots, because they have electronics which are able to take care of all the other things which used to require a third person. It's already happening. Due to the fact that there is a shortage of airline pilots from time to time, maybe it's a good thing that technology can replace the extra person.
However if you are a union airline pilot, this probably wouldn't make you very happy, and it might make you get rather hostile. If you'll recall as more farming implements became available, fewer people stayed on the family farm, and they moved to the city to do business, and seek employment. This changed the demographics of our country forever. We went to families of 10, to families of two or three offspring. Families just didn't need that many kids to run the farm, the equipment was doing it for them.
Today, we have factories which have robots building cars, and there has been some sabotage reported by auto workers who were angry that their jobs were being replaced by expensive $150,000 robots. Would airline pilots do the same thing you wonder? Well, the union conductors on the Rail Road have sabotaged conductor-less trains for the same reason. It is something to think about, although with an airliner crash that kills many people, it could change or delay autonomous airline flight for a decade. Please consider all this.
