So, even if you're not 100% convinced that the wind turbine technician job is for you, it pays to at least learn more about it.

These are the 3 ways to get yourself ready if this is the way you are going to go...

Understand the technical nature of the work - You need to be the type of person that likes troubleshooting and working on technical issues that they have not solved before. You are dealing with a device that is exposed to the elements most all of the time and therefore there will be unique problems that develop not only with the blade system but also with the generator and associated equipment around the wind turbine.

Realize that you will be working way up high most of the time - If you don't like working way up in the air on equipment that is moving all the time then the job of wind turbine technician is probably not for you. It is difficult for the utility to justify stopping a home wind turbine for it to be worked on. Therefore, much of the work that is done on these devices is done while the blades are turning. While it is very exciting to work in an environment like this, there is also risks that you need to be aware of that are quite obvious to anybody that has worked way up in the air before. But, this is why the position pays so well.

Understand that you are going to be traveling in this job - This can be a real plus or a real minus depending on your family situation. If you are going to seriously look into being a wind turbine technician then you need to understand that you are going to be on the road a lot. There's no way to work on a wind turbine over the phone. You have to get in your car or in an airplane and go to where the wind turbine is so that you can diagnose and fix the problem that it has.

In conclusion, if you are going to be a wind turbine technician, you need to go into the job with your eyes wide open.
