Winter Driving - How to Prepare For a Safe Winter on the Roads
Winter Driving - How to Prepare For a Safe Winter on the Roads
The better prepared you are, the lower the chances of having an accident and the happier you will be with your auto insurance account for another year.
I know an Australian family who drove through the night in snowy conditions in a rented SUV on their first night in Canada. All was well and they reached their destination safely, but it so easily could have ended in tragedy. They really had no idea what the risks were.
There is no need for you to take these types of risks. Make sure your car is given all the standard safety checks and properly equipped before the cold weather is upon you. These are things like checking the battery and battery terminals, the heater, and the fluids, especially the antifreeze.
At the appropriate time for your region, change to snow ties and consider having winter wiper blades fitted. If you are only having two snow tires fitted, make sure they are on the drive wheels i.e. the front wheels in a front-wheel drive and the back wheels in a back-wheel drive vehicle.
Because you cannot anticipate the unexpected, make sure you have additional safety equipment in your vehicle. Some basic items are a shovel, flashlight and batteries, candles (these can help keep you warm in a confined space) and matches, high energy food such as chocolate, a snow shovel and some form of abrasive material. This could be carpet or sand, even kitty litter, that can help you get traction in icy conditions.
As a driver prepared for all conditions, you should always have jumper cables and warning devices, such as a reflective triangle or vest, in the car.
If you get stuck, extra warm clothing or sleeping bags are very useful. Snuggle up and keep warm, but don't make the car too snug. You do need to ensure that a little fresh air is getting in, so keep one window open a crack.
The one thing many people think is a help in cold conditions is just the opposite - alcohol. It may make you feel warmer, but it does not actually warm you up, so leave it at home.
A few preparations aligned with safe driving practices will mean that you avoid the misery of a serious accident and keep your auto insurance affordable for one more winter.
