Some basic items are a shovel, flashlight and batteries, candles (these can help keep you warm in a confined space) and matches, high energy food such as chocolate, a snow shovel and some form of abrasive material. This could be carpet or sand, even kitty litter, that can help you get traction in icy conditions.

As a driver prepared for all conditions, you should always have jumper cables and warning devices, such as a reflective triangle or vest, in the car.

If you get stuck, extra warm clothing or sleeping bags are very useful. Snuggle up and keep warm, but don't make the car too snug. You do need to ensure that a little fresh air is getting in, so keep one window open a crack.

The one thing many people think is a help in cold conditions is just the opposite - alcohol. It may make you feel warmer, but it does not actually warm you up, so leave it at home.

A few preparations aligned with safe driving practices will mean that you avoid the misery of a serious accident and keep your auto insurance affordable for one more winter.
