Women In The Beauty Industry Are Great Business Role Models

Women have taken great strides to overcome oppression and discrimination over the

last century and have risen above stereotypes and generalizations to become some of the world's top leaders, business owners, and revolutionists. Women in the beauty industry have paved the way for young girls to dream big and reach any goal they desire.

Mary Kay Ash, founder of Mary Kay Cosmetics, launched her company in 1963 with just a $5,000 investment after experiencing discrimination due to her gender in her previous place of employment. She set out to prove that women could be just as successful as men, and her business model was designed to allow women to achieve more by helping other women. The company brings in over $2 billion in sales each year and Mary has been awarded with numerous honors. She died in 2001 but not before earning her place as a prominent businesswoman in American history.

Avon, America's leading direct sales initiative, has been giving women the opportunity to earn financial independence since 1886. Today, Sheri S. McCoy runs the multi-million dollar company as Chief Executive Officer. After a successful career as an executive at Johnson and Johnson, she has actively been developing the earnings program for women and advancing the Avon Corporation. She found herself at the number 10 spot on Fortune Magazine's "50 Most Powerful Women in Business" list in 2011.

Senior Vice President and Co-Founder of Nu Skin Enterprises Sandie Tillotson overcame years of adversity to become a beauty industry leader. Thanks to her perseverance and marketing ingenuity, NuSkin became a $1.7 billion dollar company and she was named as one of the top female business owners by the U.S. Working Women magazine. She was also given the prestigious honor of being included in the Feminine Fortunes magazine's 50 "Women of the New Millennium" list in 2001.

Discovered at the tender age of 17, top supermodel Cindy Crawford has become a household name all over the world. Known for her classic beauty and poise, she set out to conquer the beauty industry both behind the scenes as well as in front of the camera. She has tasted success with all her ventures including television hosting, modeling, designing, starring in and producing fitness videos, and cosmetics. Her top-selling skin care line Meaningful Beauty is just one of her most recent successes.

Bobbi Brown, leading makeup artist and entrepreneur began her career in New York as a freelance makeup artist. It took seven years of perseverance for her big break to come when she did Naomie Campbell's makeup for the cover of American Vogue. With her success came big ideas and she began creating her own line of makeup. Her first product, Brown Lip Color, was an instant success. Since then she's created an entire makeup line that is geared towards highlighting women's natural beauty. She has taught women that beauty is in the imperfections and to showcase them rather than cover them up.

Each of these women not only faced their own challenges, but overcame them to become successful and prominent leaders in the beauty industry. They each have had an impact on women and their appearances and perceptions, and show by their examples that there is no limit the amount of success a woman can have.
