Given the contentious and complex multilingual ecology of the land, India constitutes perhaps the richest database for Translation Studies in the world.

There is God's plenty' here to choose from.

As translation studies is an ciplinary field, it shares a dynamic relationship with other disciplines such as linguistics, philosophy, sociology, psychology and history.

Given this interdisciplinarity, translation studies provides a holistic, complex and unique prism through which matters of culture and society can be theorized a new with greater rigour to include both the specifics of texts and their more abstract contexts.

Given that it discusses the production and reception of translated texts within national boundaries or across borders, thus embodying an international frame, Translation studies affords a very different and special understanding of issues in cross-cultural and cross-national communication which defines the very idea of our global village'.

Despite the critical edge we have for pursuing Translation Studies, we have not exploited this resource to professionalize the activity of translation which would involve setting up new graduate programmes in Translation Studies, translator-training centers, production of quality translations, dissemination of translated texts through print and other media, building up a strong theoretical base rooted in the complex, multilingual reality of India, ext.

There are a few universities, including IGNOU which now have a School for Translation Studies.

There is Translation Today', a journal dedicated to translation matters being brought out by the Central Institute of Indian Languages, Mysore.

But, if we have to fully deploy this common wealth of languages which is unique to India, if we want Translation Studies to claim the professional status of a major discipline like medicine or engineering which it richly deserve, then, what are need is Translation University with an exclusive focus on Translation Studies and Bilingual Education.
