Women's Self Defense: Why are people attacked?
The following article is from Senshido's 'Safe For Life' book and is reproduced here under authority.
Why are people attacked?
Psychopaths: person suffering from chronic mental disorder / with abnormal social behavior; mentally or emotionally unstable person.
Sociopath: A person suffering from psychopathic personality, whose behavior is aggressively antisocial.
Victims send messages: 60% of communication is body language. For example; Walking aimlessly, daydreaming or burying your end into your chest to avoid eye contact or trying to remain unseen is communicating to your aggressor through body language that you are frightened or unaware of their presence and therefore, the perfect victim.
25% of communication is tone of voice. Through speech if you are passive submissive, then your aggressor will perceive this as you're uncomfortable with the situation and will further take advantage of you through manipulation with speech, tone of voice and body language. Not all necessarily have to be applied for an aggressor to knowingly get his way. The more resistant the potential victim, the more manipulative the aggressor, unless he feels he may have chosen a more stronger/harder adversary, to which he will be more inclined to seek out easier prey.
15% of communication is the actual words you use. It is possible to remain firm in your desire to do or not what you are uncomfortable with, without coming across as rude. Believe in yourself and the desired result you wish to attain will be yours. Stand firm, do not belittle, humiliate or challenge your potential aggressor.
Prey behavior induces predator activity: To include body language and lack of awareness in a package singles out the perfect victim to an aggressor. You may not appear on center stage in your daily life but make no mistake there are those who do this as a living, so you may be in someone's spotlight without realizing it. Let potential onlookers see you as the one they prefer to let go rather than the perfect catch.
Apathy & Denial: The criminal is banking on the fact that you are apathetic or live in denial. To ignore the fact that violence can happen to anyone & everyone at any given time is a reality that people in North America have certainly come to realize since September 11, 2001. I know there were people who thought, "It could never happen," and those who said, "It's possible," but didn't count on the tragedy to occur on that fateful day. This is what a criminal mind banks on, the fact that you are ill prepared for their attack. I'm not placing blame on the victims; I'm merely giving an example of a horrific, unbelievable event in our lives that we can all relate to. I may not live in New York or know anyone who passed away, that day, but I was very affected by the 11th of September events and I will never forget where I was the morning it happened.
3 Stages of an attack:
Stalking. Stalking does not necessarily mean the criminal has been following you for days or weeks. Stalking can occur just at the moment you had caught the criminal's eye. If the interest and effort is given by the criminal to choose you as their victim then the stalking had taken place when his eyes focused on you. Could be minutes, hours, days, weeks or even years.
Contact. Contact could be strictly through tactile sensitivity where there was no dialogue. The inclusion of their presence in your mist (For example: they create a bumper to bumper car accident to lure you closer). Or through dialogue to manipulate you in order to follow through with his plan of attack. Whatever means necessary to lure you into their domain/trap.
Attack. The actual act of physical violence, psychological damage through manipulation of human behavior or both. Of course with the physical violence a woman has already received the psychological damage.
3 Defenses to an attackAwareness. Always be aware of your surroundings. Adopt the color code, (inspired by Jeff Cooper)to serve as guide when you are away from your home. For example: Code Green is what you are in when in your home. Relaxed and the presence of danger is not present that you can see (safety in the home depends on the lifestyles and conduct within them). Code Yellow would place you in an atmosphere where you feel comfortable but danger is still possible to happen and you should be able to quickly switch into fighting mode (grocery store, movie theater). Code Red is you're in fighting mode and are very aware of everyone and everything that surrounds you. For example: Car parking lot, late at night.
Defusion. Through dialogue & body language, a potential attack can be defused to change the mindset of the attacker. By allowing him to believe that you are the perfect victim. His guard will go down while his ego will rise. If you manage to defuse the situation and no physical strikes are necessary, great. You can walk away knowing that you allowed him to go without having to harm him.
Defending. Be open and responsive to any and all types of behaviors, and variables. Never stop striking till you feel it is safe enough for you to flee without the attacker getting the better of you. Always assume that weapons or multiple attackers can appear in any given moment. Worry about wounds and possible errors made once you are safe. Not before and certainly not in the fight itself. You have more to be concerned about because while you may stop to look at your wounds, reality still continues, and your attacker is still attacking you or a family member.
