There have been instances of ladies with whole wardrobes of shoes, every style and size imaginable. Shoes have become an integral part of womens wardrobe. It was not always so, nor is it still in developing parts of the World.
In some countries of the World, the woman of the house still takes the burden of the home, the fields and crops. She has little use for footwear and is happy if her family is provided for and her home is dry, warm and secure.
A similar role existed during the Industrial Revolution in the Western World. Perhaps the fields and crops were a rarity but the maintenance of the home was the priority for every wife. Her shoes were practical, hard wearing, probably only comfortable after a period of time when the wearer suffered blisters until they softened.
Todays woman demands and gets fashion, comfort and style. A woman needs to look her best from head to toe and if that means high heels in a colour to match the handbag, hat and dress, then so be it.
We think of colour in absolute terms. Black is black, and white is white, they are absolutes with no shade. Wrong! There are many shades of white, and I mean many so therein lies a challenge to manufacturers.
There are several materials from which shoes are made: leather, plastic, rubber, canvas, even wood. Material cost varies enormously, fashion input likewise so at the high fashion end, shoes can cost a great deal of money. However, mass production, which also brought the spread of the wearing of shoes to whole new parts of the World, also meant that price became more competitive and affordable to all.
Little has changed in production terms in recent years. The upper and separate sole, formerly hand stitched together but now machine stitched and glued as well, began in the 17th Century and continues today.
What has changed is the variety of design. The working woman still requires comfort and practicality, is price conscious to varying extents. The celebrity may need something merely for a photo shoot, relaxing into more comfortable footwear once the glare of the camera has gone. The young and energetic may want a combination of both, comfortable and practical yet fashionable as well.
