Woodworking Basics - Getting Started

Being passionate about woodworking is being passionate about working with your hands in order to craft or build something of lasting value.

Whether is was the desire to create something that you could stand back and truly call your own or even perhaps a combination of that and the fact that you just don't want to pay for the overpriced high profit pieces of furniture you find in retail stores.

It doesn't matter how you have arrived at wanting to learn more about the basics of woodworking, it's very important that you take the time to gain an understanding of the wood itself... the wood.

Wood comes in a variety of properties and it is important that when you are just learning the basics of woodworking that you gain an understanding of these basic properties.

Wood will change when it is exposed to differing environmental factors such as stress, weather, and pressure, and over time will contract and expand. So, it's important to know and be able to recognize why wood acts the way it does in various situations and environments.

For the most part, there will be two different categories of wood that you will be deciding upon and working with. They come to you as either a softwood or as a hardwood.

So, the first basic of woodworking is knowing which type of wood is which and also knowing which type to use for the woodworking project you are considering. And as you get a bit further into the woodworking basics you'll come to discover other types of manufactured wood products that offer much of the same beauty as the natural wood but you won't have to worry about it changing its shape over time.

learning about and beginning to add tools to your workshop is next once you learn about the different types of wood and the various options available to you. If you're getting into woodworking, then you're getting into loving and buying new tools. It is these woodworking tools and learning how to use and master them that will allow you to build just about anything that your mind's eye can imagine.

when it comes to woodworking there is a lot and continual learning. When it comes wot woodworking, you'll never be at loss to learn something new. Whether it's a tip, technique, or something new from a manufacturer, there will always be new tools, new finishes, and new projects you want to complete.

No need to rush your woodworking learning curve because there is plenty of time. You'll want to tackle the basic woodworking aspects first.
