Woodworking Tools And How To Keep Them Sharpened

Is it necessary to buy a power sharpener to keep your woodworking tools sharp

? Regular maintenance of your tools just using a stone to sharpen the blades will be more than sufficient. However, heavily damaged blades are a different story, and to sharpen them you will need something better, like the power sharpener. The edge of the blade will need to be ground until you get rid of all the nicks and dents in it, so as to make it run smoothly.

Grinding machines, how and when to use them:

Grinding your woodworking tools on the standard grinder that you find in shops is not always the best idea, since these tools can be easily broken. You need a grinding wheel that was made especially for sharpening woodworking tools. Normally it is blades like those of the lawn mower that the common grinder wheel was designed to sharpen, not woodworking tool blades.

When using a shop grinder, you'll have a hard time managing the grinding process, because the tool rests of such a grinder are tiny. So if you want to grind woodworking tools, you will have to upgrade the rests.

Choosing between dry grinders and wet grinders

If you need a grinder, you can choose either a dry one or a wet one. Most shops have a grinding wheel affixed to the arbor with a motor to power the wheel. They also have rests designed to help you control the grinding process. Vertically set, dry grinder wheels are generally eight inches in width, sometimes larger. If you use a smaller wheel, hollow grinding will be a regular problem in your work.

A wet grinder will make your life really easy. Not only will it keep the blades cool, but the water used in the process will remove the sliver split from the grinding stone. Other advantages of this type of grinder are the speed, slower than that of a dry grinder, and the position of the wheel which can also be horizontal, not only vertical.

Since the wet grinder's wheel is half under water in a vat, you will have a steady water-flux when grinding. Bigger is better when it comes to wet grinders.

The trouble with grinders

The problem with dry grinders is that during grinding, the blade is bound to overheat, thus losing strength and hardness. Also the shaving resulted from the grinding can stick to the blade of the tool and make it less dependable in your work. When this happens it needs to be refurbished using a dressing tool. With the wet grinder one of the greatest drawbacks is the water that needs to be dripped onto the wheel while the grinding takes place. The tank containing the water is normally suspended above the grinding machine. One of the biggest differences between the two types of grinders may be the cost.
